Key Stage 2 Update

I would like to inform you that our much valued and respected KS2 teacher Lissi Hayball has successfully gained another teaching position at a school in Warwickshire. The location of the new school is indicative of the reason behind her difficult decision to move on – to relocate in order to be with her partner. Lissi will be missed by all. However, I am certain you will join me in wishing her all the best for her exciting move, new job in September and indeed her continuing success in this profession. Plans to appoint new teacher for September are in place and we will keep you informed about the process.

Reminder for May Revels

Costumes

Girls – flowery dresses/flat shoes

Boys – grey trousers/white shirt/black shoes

School will be providing sashes and ribbons on the day

Please bear in mind the temperature – your child may need extra layers on the day

Swimming & PE – Wednesday afternoons

Based on our experience last week we anticipate that our return to school from Cirencester Leisure Centre will be 3.45pm.

Could all pupils therefore be collected from school at 3.45pm and not 3.30pm as previously stated.

Swimming and PE – Term 5

Swimming and PE will take place at Cirencester Leisure Centre next term on Wednesday afternoons of the following dates.

Wednesday 21st April, Wednesday 28th April, Wednesday 5th May, Wednesday 12th May, Wednesday 19th May.

Wednesday 9th June, Wednesday 16th June, Wednesday 23rd June, Wednesday 30th June and Wednesday 7th July.

Pupils will board the bus at 1.00pm after lunch. The PE Session will start at 1.30pm and the 30 minute swimming session starts at 2.30pm which means that we expect to be back at school for 3.45pm collection. Due to continued subsidy the cost of swimming will be £2.50 per pupil, per session (£25.00 for 10 weeks)

All pupils will need to come to school with both PE and swimming kit on those days.

Music Tuition

As from April the cost of music/singing tuition will increase by £1.00 per pupil, per week, from £35.00 to £45.00 per 10 week allocation.

The popularity of music/singing lessons has resulted in the cost of subsidy rising substantially. This increase was agreed at the Finance Committee meeting of the Governing Body to make fair use of the Trust allowance for school activities in order that all pupils benefit. Without the subsidy the lessons would cost £60.80, so there is still a considerable saving made.

In light of this the Governing Body will be asking the Trust for a larger allocation for school activities next year.

In order to make the system even more cost effective, we request 5 weeks notice if you decide that your child wants to stop the tuition.

Parent consultations – review of pupil progress.

Tuesday 27th April – 3.15pm -5.45pm Wednesday 28th April – 4.00pm- 6.30pm (in addition for KS2 1.00pm-3.00pm).

Our procedures for parents evening were discussed at a recent staff meeting. It was felt that all too often timings “over ran” which resulted in frustrating long waits for some parents of sometimes up to an hour. Indeed many of the received parent questionnaires had requested that longer slots be allocated or that we try to reduce the amount of waiting time.

In order to address these issues and make the time more productive for all we would like to trial a new system.

- Appointment slots will need to be made in the same way but we shall be increasing individual time allocations to 15 minutes per pupil.

- In order to accommodate the extra time allocation Miss Hayball will be available to meet with parents during the afternoon of Wednesday 28th April.

- We request that you arrive a few minutes early and at the time of your allocated slot and knock on the door of the classroom room to indicate that it is time for the next meeting to start.

- Your child’s work will be available to look at either before or after your appointment.

The main purpose of the meeting is to review your child’s progress. However, if you have a specific concern that you would like to discuss in more detail or you feel needs more than the allocated 15 minutes please do not hesitate to make another appointment to meet with your child’s class teacher. As always, staff will endeavour to arrange to meet with you at a mutually convenient time.

Our aim is to ensure that all parents are given equal time to discuss their child’s progress and that long waits are a thing of the past. We feel confident that good time management by both staff and parents and working in partnership will best ensure we are all best placed to make the system work effectively. Booking timetables will be displayed at the end of this week. Appointments can also be made by telephoning the school office.

Children enjoy China Day

The children at Oakridge all enjoyed learning about China today. A variety of activities were experienced by all of the children including paper cutting, food testing and a Chinese wake and shake. The school was also visited by Mr Song who talked to the children about the differences between his school in China and Oakridge. The staff would like to thank all of the parents who helped make the day such a success.

Celebrating China Day – Tuesday 2nd March 2010.

In order to further enhance our understanding of other cultures we will be spending the day exploring the traditions and celebrating Chinese culture. During the day our pupils will experience a number of practical workshops including calligraphy, paper cutting and cooking. We look forward to welcoming Mr Song who will be joining us for the morning. Mr Song is a visiting teacher from China, currently working in a Gloucestershire secondary school.On the day your child/children will need to bring an old apron or shirt to protect their clothes when taking part in the art activities.

All staff are excited about sharing the artefacts we have collected. If any children/parents would like to do the same please bring them in on the morning.

Proposed KS2 Residential Trip

We are writing to inform you of a proposed KS2 residential visit in July this year. Our plans are to take the KS2 pupils to Court Farm near Ross-On-Wye. This centre, run by PGL, is the location used in our 2008 residential. During our visit we were particularly impressed by the expertise and professionalism of the instructional staff and group leaders. The pupils who participated in 2008 thoroughly enjoyed the experience and those still with us have requested that we return there. We would ensure that the range of activities would be different to those chosen last time. A provisional booking has been made to stay in the main complex on

Wednesday 14th July – Friday 16th July (3 days / 2 nights)

The cost of the PGL visit including accommodation and activities etc is £167.00 per pupil and the total cost of the coach to and from Court Farm is approximately £340. The Oakridge Parochial School Charitable Trust will subsidise these costs by paying for the cost of the coach so on this occasion we will be asking for a contribution of £167.00 per pupil. In order to proceed with the booking we need to confirm numbers by Friday 12th February. Please complete the form available from Carolyn and return to the school office as soon as possible, no later than Friday 12th February.
