Dear Parents

Please see the message below regarding the Olympic Torch Relay coming through Stroud.

Olympic Torch Relay 23 May 2012

On Wednesday 23 May the Olympic Torch will enter Stroud at around 4.15pm and be carried through the town centre to Beeches Green, it will then make its journey towards Painswick to arrive at 5pm. Please visit www.stroud.gov.uk/london2012 for more.

The route: Detailed information (including downloadable maps) of the Olympic Torch Relay route through Stroud & Painswick can be found here: http://bit.ly/Jbn5Hm

Celebrating: Information on events and celebrations and how to get involved, including a Starter Pack, can be found here: http://bit.ly/KJaEA0

Road Closures: The plan is to close the roads at any time from 2pm up to 15 minutes before the Torch passes through. The timing of the closure will be the decision of the Police based on crowds and other considerations on the day. The intention being to minimise disruption. Advice is to plan for disruption from 2pm. Detailed maps can be found here: http://bit.ly/Jbn5Hm

Very kind regards

Kevin Ward and Jane Bullows

Stroud District Council

Cultural Services

The school plans to keep normal collection timings, if you feel that road closures may impact on your ability to collect your child/children at 3.15pm please do not hesitate to arrange an earlier pick up time.

As the torch will be passing through Cirencester at 3.45pm on 23rd May and roads near to the leisure centre will be closed two hours beforehand there will be no swimming and PE that day.

Yours sincerely

Hopefully the worst of the wet weather is over with –and a long hot summer is in store! So now is the perfect time for Oakridge pupils to grab their bike helmets, get on their bikes and cycle to school.

Undertaking regular physical activity stands children in really good stead for keeping fit and healthy for life. There are many benefits to cycling to school including reducing traffic on the village roads/around the school and increasing health and fitness –but most of all it’s FUN! During the summer term, Oakridge school will be running a number of initiatives to promote cycling including: classroom activities, ‘Bikeability’ training for years 5/6, and cycling skills training for year 4. We’re also making the railings to the side of the school a ‘bicycle-only’ zone between school hours so pupils have a dedicated and safe area to store their bikes. We will continue to encourage cycling (and walking) as a healthy year-round way to get to our school. Although it may mean leaving home a little earlier in the mornings and it won’t always be possible when it’s really cold and wet, it would be fantastic for parents and pupils to encourage each other to walk and cycle to school whenever possible.

Thank you for your support!

Cross Country Results

Congratulations to all our runners for their hard work and achievement in the recent cross country events. Our runners performed very well gaining 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th places at the recent events at Stratford Park. A very extra special well done to Hester who came 4th in the County Championships on Saturday.

Sport Relief – an amazing success.

So far we have raised a magnificent £458.52 for Sport Relief; this is well over the target that we set ourselves of £200. The event was enjoyed by all and we were very proud of all our pupils who not only completed at least one mile around the village but took part in a full range of sporting activities during the day.

Thank to you all families and parents who supported the event – and a special well done to Beth Ordway who took a complete soaking.

Swimming and PE – Terms 5 & 6

Please find attached a letter concerning swimming and PE at Cirencester Leisure Centre during terms 5 & 6.

Please note that PE will be on Wednesday and Friday afternoons for Class 1 & 2 for terms 5 & 6

German Club Play

We are very pleased to have Sue Wise supporting us in running a weekly German Club in school. The pupils who take part in this club had the opportunity this week to demonstrate their language skills in a performance which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

PGL Residential for Class 2

Thank you to those who have sent in their interim payment of £30.00 per pupil. Please could any outstanding payments be made at the start of term 5. Thank you.

Cycle Training for Year 5 & 6 Pupils

The OSA has kindly agreed to fund cycle training for year 5 & 6 pupils. To enable your child to take part in this please return the permission form to Carolyn as soon as possible. Should your child not wish to take part please inform Carolyn as we need to confirm numbers early next term.

Start of Term 5

We return to school for the start of term 5 on Monday 16th April.

On behalf of the staff I would like to thank all families for their continuing support for the school. We wish you a great Easter break and look forward to the events of the Summer terms.
