Key Stage 2 visit to PGL.

Photos have been uploaded on to the school website. We also plan to produce a disc of photos for families who would like one. There will be a small charge for this to cover the cost of the discs. All pupils were a real credit to both the school and their families. I would also like to say a big thank you to Jason Williams, Miss Hayball and Mrs Warren for giving up their time at the weekend to support the visit.

Violin lessons.

Would your child be interested taking up the chance to play violin in September? Guilia Holland is in the process of investigating the possibility of organising group violin lessons with Ann Jenkins a teacher from the Gloucestershire music service. If you are interested please could you let Carolyn know.

Key Stage 2 visit to PGL.

The residential visit to PGL was a tremendous success and enjoyed by all. It is so rewarding to observe the children participating in the activities such a centre provides and to see them face challenges and often conquer fears. As usual the PGL staff were extremely professional and superb with the children. Feedback from the children was that the food was better than previous years.
Arrangements are currently in place to upload the photos on to the school website. We also plan to produce a disc of photos for families who would like one. There will be a small charge for this to cover the cost of the discs.

Slimbridge Visit.

Class 1 had lovely weather to make their pond dipping visit to the centre at Slimbridge a great success. Photos of the day are currently displayed on the TV monitor in the entrance hall.

Parent Governor Nominations.

On behalf of the Governing Body I am pleased to inform you that Tim Hampton is our new governor.

Reminders.

For those families who have not yet paid the contribution towards swimming, please could you ensure that the outstanding payments reach the school office by Friday 2nd July.

Carolyn also requests that all orders for school photos are returned to school by Monday 28th June.

Key Stage 2 classteacher.

On Wednesday and Thursday next week Miss Lara Burtwell will be coming in to school to spend some time getting to know the Class 2 pupils. Miss Hayball and Miss Burtwell will be doing some team teaching as well as spending time planning to ensure the transition in September is smooth and successful.

Singing performance – an extra date for your diary.

The pupils who are involved in singing tuition with Vicky Barnes-Moffat will be performing to the whole school on the afternoon of Tuesday 6th July. The performance will take place in the church at 2.15pm and all parents are invited to come along and hear the pupils sing.

OSA meeting.

The next meeting of the OSA is Tuesday 29th June at 7.45pm in school.

Extra Inset Day 2010/11.

Although the DfE has withdrawn the new curriculum they have not yet withdrawn the changes to the Statutory Instrument that allows primary schools to only provide 189 teaching days next year. Therefore our additional inset day will be Friday 18th February 2011. (Please see Carolyn in school office if you would like an updated term list)

We all keep our fingers crossed that the lovely weather we are experiencing will be the same during our forthcoming weekend visit to PGL. However, in the meantime it is very important that if the weather is sunny your child / children comes to school with sun cream already applied and prepared with sun hat. We are incredibly fortunate that the large trees on the green provide a huge amount of shade, but there is still quite a lot of the green which is uncovered.

KS2 PGL Residential – Parents Meeting

I am writing to inform you that we shall be holding a PGL information evening on Thursday 24th June at 6pm.

The aims of the meeting are

to give you a brief overview of what PGL is
tell you about what the children will be doing
explain how they are looked after and what they will need to take with them

There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

I would be grateful if you could let the school office know if you are able to attend by Monday 21st June to give us an idea of numbers. It would be great to see as many of you as possible – especially if your child has not attended a residential visit before.

KS1 Visit to Slimbridge

On Tuesday 22nd June the KS1 and Foundation Stage children will be visiting The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge. The coach will leave school at 10.00 am and return by 3.15 pm. The children will be taking part in a ‘Pond Explorer’ session and have time to look round. They will need to take a packed lunch in a small back pack, wear suitable footwear and take a raincoat in case of bad weather.

Oakridge Parochial School Charitable Trust will pay for the coach to and from Slimbridge. On this occasion we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £6.50 per pupil towards admission, activities and learning session. Please complete a permission slip (available from the school office) and return to school by Thursday 17th June.

New appointment for KS2.
Interviews were held in school this week to appoint a new teacher for our Key Stage 2 class. We are pleased to announce that Lara Burtwell was the successful candidate. Lara is currently working at another small school in Gloucestershire whilst she completes her studies. Her recent experience of mixed age teaching, enthusiasm and vibrancy really made her shine. We are delighted that she will be joining our team to build upon the outstanding work carried out by Miss Hayball. Lara will be spending time in the school before September as part of her induction. A transition day is planned for 1st July – to include the current Y2 pupils – when Lara will teach the class for the day.

Did you know?
The following after school clubs are available to our pupils at Thomas Keble School.

Monday – Netball from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.
Tuesday – Gymnastics from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. (possibly trampolining in term 6)
Wednesday – Table tennis and badminton from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.
Thursday – Tennis (new for term 6) from 4.45pm to 5.45pm.
Friday – Basketball club from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

Could you be a Governor at our school?
In the first week of Term 6 we will be sending out information regarding nominations for parent governor election. In order to provide more information about the role we have produced an information sheet that we hope will be useful. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or Brian Cheeseman for more information.

Finally, thank you so much to all who were involved in supporting our visit from Holy Trinity School. A great time was had by all and the visiting staff and pupils were so impressed by our very unique school and setting. Many photographs are on the website.

Year 6 super stars.

Well done to Alfie, Alban, Ben, Joe, Maria and Megan who successfully completed the end of Key Stage 2 SATs this week. All staff have been extremely impressed with their attitude and preparation not just this week but throughout the school year. In order to celebrate their achievements the class took part in the traditional “toast with toast”.

The Marvellous May Revels.

In spite of the cold and somewhat damp weather the 2010 May Revels was still an enjoyable and fun experience for all. Many positive and supportive comments have been received about the skill of our pupils’ May Pole dancing and a number of people have expressed just how much they enjoyed the traditional theme. The event is featured in the most recent edition of the Stroud News and Journal with a report by Hester in Year 4 and photos by Nick Miles. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped to support the preparation, the setting up and the running of the day. The event runs so smoothly due to the amount of hard work and dedication behind the scenes.

A meeting of the School Association will take place next Thursday 20th May 8.15pm at school.

Visit to Oakridge.

On Tuesday 18th May 26 Y5 pupils from Holy Trinity School in London will spend the day at our school. Our Key Stage 2 class has already been in contact with the pupils through written communication. Last term the classes studied the same topic – Victorians. We were thrilled this week to receive a copy of a DVD the class had made on the subject. Our main aims for the day are to show the visiting children our very special local environment and to give the pupils from both schools the opportunity to get to know each other and discover both the differences and similarities in their learning experiences.

A leaflet giving information regarding summer activities in the Stroud area is available from the school office.

Achievement Worship

There will be an achievement worship on Friday 28th May at 9.10am in church.

Wildlife Trust Walk

There is a 5 mile family walk taking place on Sunday 16th May starting at The Daneway at 10am and passing the school. Please see the Walk for Wildlife poster in the window for more information.
